Three people a day die from asthma.
Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to changing this.

Out There & Active campaign

Around one-third of children with asthma miss out on PE and sports about once a week because of their condition, despite the fact that most should be able to take part as long as their asthma is under control.

Asthma UK's 'Out There & Active' campaign aims to encourage children with asthma to take part in sports and physical activities by promoting understanding about exercise and asthma. This page contains tips on exercising safely with asthma, and factfiles, posters and booklets for young people, parents, teachers and sports coaches.

Tips to help children with asthma exercise safely

  1. Make sure your teacher/instructor knows you have asthma
  2. Increase your fitness levels gradually
  3. Always have your reliever inhaler with you when you exercise
  4. If exercise triggers your asthma use your reliever inhaler immediately before you warm up
  5. Ensure that you always warm up and warm down
  6. Try not to come in contact with things that trigger your asthma
  7. If you have asthma symptoms when you exercise, stop, take your reliever inhaler and wait five minutes before starting again
  8. If you use preventer medicine, take it as prescribed by your doctor or nurse
