Asthma: Severe asthma and allergies

May was diagnosed with asthma aged 17 months. She has severe asthma and allergies and as a result she missed a lot of school when younger, sometimes up to half of the academic year.

Having such severe asthma has left May feeling isolated at times and in the past she has been bullied because of the side effects of oral steroids. May feels that some hospital doctors don’t have enough training on asthma and can therefore be dismissive about the condition. She is also critical of health services available to her as a young person making the transition to adulthood, for example the loss of access to a paediatric community nurse.

May has benefited from our Kick Asthma holidays and been a member of the Asthma UK Youth Forum.

 Our funded research looks at reducing the impact of asthma on lives like May's.
