Fellowships and studentships

Through our fellowship and studentship programme we hope to identify, support, and promote the development of asthma experts and opinion leaders of the future.

Asthma UK currently funds three research fellows based in Aberdeen, London and Southampton.

We also fund five PhD students; two at the MRC-Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma, and a further three in collaboration with the Medical Research Council.

Our primary reason for funding fellowships and studentships is to build capacity in asthma research.

The benefits of capacity building

By investing in young and up-and-coming scientists and clinicians, we aim to enhance and develop the current network of asthma researchers working in the UK.

Respiratory research in the UK has long been under-funded in relation to its impact on people's lives - and disproportionately so when compared with other research areas, such as cancer and heart disease.

As well as being of huge importance to the respiratory research community, capacity building in asthma research is also vital to Asthma UK achieving its vision of ‘Control over asthma today, freedom from asthma tomorrow’. A cohort of new researchers will mean more people working towards discovering novel mechanisms in asthma and allergy, developing new treatments and designing innovative methods of managing asthma.

Applying for funding

There is currently no new funding available for fellowships or studentships from Asthma UK.

We will not be inviting further applications for any type of research or conference funding until at least January 2010.
