Policies and position statements

Our expectations of Asthma UK grantholders are set out in our terms and conditions. Key points are summarised below, and the full document can be downloaded by clicking on the link on the right hand side of this page. Although this is the most up-to-date version for Foundation grants, 90% of the information applies to all grants held with us.

Asthma UK is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC). Therefore all our working practices, and the terms and conditions that we ask you to comply with, are in accordance with AMRC guidelines.

Publications and publicity

  • Asthma UK should be informed as soon as a research article based on Asthma UK funded research (wholly or partly) is accepted for publication or presentation, to allow us time to consider the implications and/or publicity potential.
  • Grantholders must ensure that Asthma UK's contribution to funding is suitably acknowledged in all presentations and publications (including Abstracts). Publications should quote the Asthma UK grant ID number.
  • Grantholders must ensure that any press statements associated wholly or partly with the research funded are approved by Asthma UK Media Team prior to release. Asthma UK may wish to participate in any such releases.
  • Wherever appropriate, grantholders will be expected to acknowledge and promote the work of Asthma UK (eg in scientific meetings, presentations to the media and other similar contexts).

Intellectual property

  • Asthma UK expects host institutions to have internal procedures requiring all articles and presentations based on Asthma UK funded research to be submitted to research supervisors or the technology transfer/industrial liaison unit of the institution prior to being made public to ensure that any intellectual property (IP) is identified and protected.
  • Asthma UK requires Asthma UK funded researchers, their host institutions and associated technology transfer companies to ensure the protection and exploitation of IP.
  • The host institution shall ensure that ownership of the IP arising from work funded in whole or in part by Asthma UK, and lead responsibility for its management, vests in the host institution (or its associated technology transfer company).
  • No IP created or acquired in connection with an Asthma UK funded activity may be exploited in any way without the prior written consent of
Asthma UK, such consent not to be unreasonably withheld.

Reimbursement of research costs

  • Claims for reimbursement of salary and research costs should be submitted quarterly in arrears by the university or research institution Finance Officer, detailing the expenditure (named individual for salary claims), period covered and stating the name of the grantholder and grant ID number.
  • Invoices must be submitted with enough detail to verify the costs incurred against the grant made as detailed in the application. Copies of the suppliers invoice must accompany claims for equipment.
  • The final claim will only be accepted if it is submitted within six months of the end of the grant period and a final report has been received and accepted by Asthma UK.
  • Virements between salaries, consumables and equipment are generally not allowed but will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Permission in writing must be sought from the Assistant Director, Research.
If at completion, the project runs under-budget, any excess monies awarded shall belong to Asthma UK.
  • Asthma UK does not pay for university or research institution overheads or general administration costs.  These could include, general travel, advertising for posts, financial services, staff facilities, staff development, public relations, publication costs, general institutional libraries, routine secretarial work, personnel services, stationery or contribution to general departmental overheads.
