Involve people with asthma in your research

We believe it is vital that people with asthma, and parents and carers of people with asthma, are given the opportunity to influence and participate in research.

We have therefore contacted people with asthma, asking them to become Asthma UK Research & Policy Volunteers. We currently have around 100 volunteers to whom we can publicise opportunities to get involved in research.

I can give you overwhelmingly positive feedback about both the process and the experience of recruiting and working with the volunteers

How to go about it

If you would like people affected by asthma to become involved in your research, either as a participant (for example, taking part in surveys) or to inform your work (such as inputting in the design of a study or sitting on a project steering group), please download the application form & guidance notes.

Send your completed application form to:

Please note that recruitment to activities is usually more successful when longer lead times are given (at least six weeks).

Email research@asthma.org.uk if you would like to discuss your opportunity with a member of Asthma UK’s Research Team.

A unique resource

We currently have around 100 Research & Policy volunteers and this number is increasing all the time.

Our volunteers are based all over the UK and come from different age groups and backgrounds and have different experiences of living
with asthma.

Research & Policy volunteers include parents and carers, and people with symptoms ranging from mild to severe and difficult to control asthma.

Positive experiences

Last year we were approached by a researcher looking for two people with asthma to input into the design of their study. The researcher later said:

‘It was helpful meeting the two volunteers and I found their input useful - they were both very intelligent and articulate - when I apply for NIHR funding I will cite their involvement.’

We also recruited a number of parents to take part in the focus group run by researchers based at the University of York. The researchers had the following feedback:

‘I can give you overwhelmingly positive feedback about both the process and the experience of recruiting and working with the volunteers selected through your pilot project. We recruited exactly the people we needed, who were all motivated, attended the focus group and contributed with their time and experience which was invaluable for the project.'
