Three people a day die from asthma.
Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to changing this.

Get involved with the Liverpool Asthma Activist Project

Liverpool has a problem with asthma management. Liverpool's emergency admissions are amongst the highest in the country. The majority of emergency admissions are avoidable if people have better control of their asthma. An emergency admission is 3.5 times more expensive than managing asthma in the community and is also a stressful, and on occasions, life threatening experience.

Asthma UK has just launched the Liverpool Asthma Activist Project. The aim of the project is to:

  • Improve the quality of life of 500 people with poorly managed asthma in Liverpool.
  • Reduce the number of costly, stressful and potentially life-threatening emergency admissions.

There are two ways in which you can get involved with the Liverpool Asthma Activist Project.

  1. Become an Asthma Activist in Liverpool.
  2. Get support from an Asthma Activist in Liverpool.

Become an Asthma Activist in Liverpool

We're recruiting people with asthma who have good asthma management to support people with poorly managed asthma in areas of the city that have the highest emergency admissions.

To be an Asthma Activist, you need to:

  • Have asthma that is well managed - this means that you have minimal asthma symptoms with no interference to your daily life (eg work, housework or physical activities) and no interference to your sleeping because of your asthma symptoms (this includes cough). Your asthma may be more severe, but you are working with your doctor or nurse to achieve a good level of control.
  • Live in Liverpool.
  • Be prepared to become one of Asthma UK's volunteers.
  • Have some spare time to commit to the project - a minimum of, on average, one hour a week. It won't necessarily be every week but could average out to around one hour a week or four hours a month.

As an Asthma Activist, you will:

  • Receive high-quality training and ongoing support from Asthma UK.
  • Be part of a network of over 1,000 Asthma UK volunteers.
  • Provide peer support to people with poorly managed asthma to help improve their quality of life and reduce the risks asthma can pose.
  • Be part of a groundbreaking project for the charity.
  • Have out-of-pocket expenses such as travel paid by the charity.
  • Add a first-class volunteer experience to your CV and boost your career development prospects.
