Point of diagnosis

Basic guide to asthma for parents of children who have recently been diagnosed. Asthma UK has produced two booklets for health professionals to use with people who have just been diagnosed with asthma.
More than a quarter of a million people are diagnosed with asthma every year. Information given at this time can have a substantial impact on their quality of life. It gives people the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about their condition, improving their asthma management and reducing the burden on healthcare resources.

About the booklets

A recent Asthma UK survey showed that, at the time of diagnosis, less than half of people with asthma are told how to recognise worsening symptoms or what to do in an asthma attack. Only a third of people diagnosed with asthma are given written information about their condition.

Basic guide to asthma for adults who have recently been diagnosed. For these reasons, Asthma UK has produced two information booklets:

  • Asthma & Me (for adults and young people over 12 years of age)
  • Asthma & My Child (for parents of children under 12).

The booklets offer people with asthma everything they need to know when first diagnosed and aim to answer any questions and concerns they may have about their asthma.

How can these booklets help you as a health professional?

The booklets will help patients build a partnership with you and help you reinforce important information about the condition right from the start. They provide information, reassurance and advice, as well as answering important questions for people newly diagnosed. Contents include:

  • What is asthma and what triggers it?
  • Asthma treatments and how to take them
  • Controlling your/your child's asthma
  • What to do in an asthma attack
  • An 'Asthma Medicine Card'
