Three people a day die from asthma.
Asthma UK is the charity dedicated to changing this.

Funding opportunities

Our new research strategy describes how, when, where and why we will fund asthma research over the next five years to achieve the most benefit for people with asthma.

We will continue to fund world-class laboratory-based research. In addition, we will support more clinical research that has a practical application and the potential to bring about health benefits within five years.

We will support the growth of the asthma research community in the UK by helping promising researchers become established in their career. We will also explore possibilities to collaborate with other research organisations to increase the amount of funding available for asthma research.

The following awards will be offered between 2011 and 2016:

All applications are subject to external peer review and are assessed by the charity's Research Review Panel of leading scientific and clinical experts and lay reviewers.

Fellowships and Studentships

Two new types of fellowship award will be offered in 2012 then in alternate years thereafter: Senior Postdoctoral Development Awards and Senior Clinical Academic Development Awards.

Capacity-building PhD Studentships will be offered in the alternate years between the fellowship awards, starting in 2013.

Commissioned research

Priority Needs Grants of variable amounts will be offered in alternate years starting in 2012 to address some of the major unanswered questions in asthma research and service delivery as highlighted by Asthma UK. They will be available for up to 5 years, depending on the topic.

Asthma UK Centre in Applied Research

In May 2012 we will call for applications to create a newcentre for applied research. Applicants will be free to interpret Asthma UK's vision for the centre in terms of the infrastructure they need to deliver it but we anticipate it using anetworked model to bring together leading researchers to develop large scale clinical trials and other investigative studies across the UK.

Project Grants

Every two years from 2013, we will invite applications for larger, longer duration grants to tackle challenges in stable research fields and research fields in flux aligned with our priority research areas.

Innovation grants

In alternate years from 2014, we will offer small grants to explore original ideas in inherently novel priority asthma research areas.

Further information about all of these awards can be found elsewhere in this section.
