Aims: To develop, implement and evaluate workshops for young people with asthma and compare results with workshops for young people with diabetes.

‘Getting Sorted’ is a series of 4 self care workshops designed and  delivered ‘by young people for young people’. So far, two projects have found out what young people with diabetes and asthma think of them.

46 young people with asthma (11-16 years) took part in initial ‘Talking Groups’. 15 of these young people also participated in the workshops.

Key benefits of the workshops highlighted by the young people include:

  • Getting to know and make friends with other young people
  • Gaining support from other young people
  • Increasing confidence and self esteem and feeling more positive
  • Learning about coping with asthma and feeling more in control
  • Being able to share their experiences
  • Developing independence in relation to clinic/GP visits
  • Feeling better able to communicate with others.

The young people with asthma and diabetes shared several views, issues and experiences in common. There were also many similarities when they discussed how they had benefited from the workshops.

A key message to emerge from both ‘Getting Sorted’ projects was the positive benefits of engaging young people at every stage.

The ‘Getting Sorted’ project with young people with asthma has clearly demonstrated that the self care model developed with young people with diabetes is transferable to other condition specific groups.
