Huff & Puff
£41,000 | Maldon & South Chelmsford PCT
August 2005 - August 2007
Aims: Project involving children in arts programme and training health professionals. The project will consist of two strands:
1. Developing an arts programme that will include singing to improve breathing and self-confidence.
2.
Working with children and young people with asthma to educate health
professionals and school/PE teachers in dealing with asthma.
Status:
After developing the recruitment materials, the music sessions (singing
and playing brass instruments) commenced in February 2006 in a local
primary and secondary school. The project is now completed.
Outcomes:
- Over 1000 children received information and education about asthma.
- Two books were written based around the story of the 3 little pigs/Big Bad Wolf to teach children about asthma. [Include image of story book]
- A board game was developed involving children progressing round the board by use of dice and answering questions relating to asthma. Another game was also created which takes the format of a memory card. The children have to match statements about asthma inhalers and triggers to pictures. This reinforces basic principles of asthma management and helps children to recognise the signs of deterioration in their condition so that they are able to refer to any asthma action plan that they may have. An information pack was developed - this can be ordered from Asthma UK.
- An information pack was developed for teachers, nurses or parents who want to run a Huff and Puff club, it includes a CD ROM, a story for younger children and games
