Improving asthma care for schoolchildren

£42,300 | Luton Primary Care Trust
September 2004 - January 2007

Aims: Improving asthma care for children in an area with a high proportion of black and ethnic minorities. Children are actively involved in the project run by the paediatric sister and school nurse.

Status: The project has now been completed and has raised awareness in schools and primary care, started to improve standards and encouraged the provision of more education for local healthcare professionals on asthma. The project has also contributed hugely to Asthma UK's Emergency Asthma Care Pack materials.

Updates:
  • Luton became a site for a pilot for Asthma UK’s Emergency Care Pack.
  • As stall was set up outside a large supermarket in Luton attempting to raise awareness of asthma and teach correct inhaler technique in support of World Asthma day.
  • Asthma toolkits were designed and ordered. These have provided a resource for healthcare professionals in educating about asthma treatment and management.
  • The Childhood Asthma group launched the School Policy.
  • We have now trained over 300 people and numbers continue to grow.
