Planet asthma

£38,310 | Bromley by Bow Centre, East London
March 2006 - December 2007

Aims: This project uses art to enhance the health and well-being of young people (5-18) with asthma, especially those within ethnic minorities and in areas of high social deprivation.

Status: A website - planetasthma.org.uk - was designed by young people with asthma. Art, education and exercise workshops have been held at a local primary school, which have had a very positive effect on all the young people. Similar workshops have been held in a GP surgery. Artwork has been produced, which being displayed in the school and local pharmacists are also supporting the project.

Update:

  • A series of workshops were run. The sessions looked at basic understanding of the internet and web addresses, using Dreamweaver as a web design tool, website design and layout and brainstorming the design for Planet Asthma and the website image.
  • The young people also had workshops on understanding cameras and video recording, which allowed them to take part in practical sessions using camera and video.
  • A series of structured asthma workshops were also held alongside the web design sessions using Asthma UK resources.
  • Young people participated in a half day exercise workshop, to discuss their asthma control as part of the project investigation.
  • Art and exercise workshops at the Marner Primary School were scheduled to closely follow on from the website design workshops.
  • Three workshops in the same format as that of the school were run at a GP practice.
  • The Planet Asthma workshops finished at the end of the summer term resulting in a body of art work made in the project, with a large amount of unedited video footage from the workshops and a website in progress.
  • Planet Asthma day was a mid point celebration involving all the project participants and their families.
  • The finished art work (framed stencil and blow paintings, painted and varnished house dust mites and light boxes) has been successfully installed in the Marner Primary School and Chrisp Street Health centre.
  • The Bromley by Bow Centre has hosted further art workshops for World Asthma Day (May 1st) at two child health clinics and a local parents health forum.
