Research profile: Dr Mark Larché

Dr Mark LarchéDr Mark Larché is based at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College in London. He is also an Asthma UK Senior Research Fellow.

Asthma UK is supporting his current research into developing new vaccines for asthma and allergic diseases.

What is your personal interest in asthma?

The sight of someone having a severe asthma attack is not easily forgotten, but for me asthma is also a 'tool' in my working life. I am constantly looking for ways to investigate the mechanisms involved in chronic diseases. Asthma is the perfect model to study, because the response is fast and can be measured easily.

What do you enjoy most about your work for Asthma UK?

Research of this kind is tremendously rewarding because it translates into something that will be of direct benefit to patients within a relatively short period of time. Thanks to Asthma UK I am doing something that I really enjoy in the knowledge that it will ultimately produce something of real value for people with asthma.

What do you hope to achieve during your time as a senior research fellow?

I will be further developing our protective vaccinations for people allergic to cat allergens. This work will help us to develop similar vaccines for grass pollen, house- dust mites and other important allergens.
