GAVIN TURK & DAMIEN HIRST TO SUPPORT UNIQUE ASTHMA AUCTION
GAVIN TURK & DAMIEN HIRST TO SUPPORT UNIQUE ASTHMA AUCTION
31 October 2006
Young British Artists Gavin Turk and Damien Hirst will be among a number of eminent artists donating their work to an art exhibition and Auction hosted by Asthma UK.
The event, entitled Deep Inspiration, will take place at the contemporary art venue the Jerwood Space, London SE1 from 30 January to 6 February 2007. Tracey Emin, Quentin Blake and Turner Prize nominee Fiona Banner will also be donating pieces of their work to the auction.
Donna Covey, Chief Executive of Asthma UK said: ‘This is a fantastic coup for Asthma UK. To have artists of this calibre lending their support means that the profile of asthma can be raised and we can reach new audiences. We are incredibly grateful to the artists.’
Deep Inspiration is also seeking to attract work from emerging artists who are being encouraged to produce pieces based around the theme of breath and breathing. The exhibition aims to develop a link between asthma and art through the work of talented artists and reach out to new audiences with the message that asthma is serious, widespread but controllable. So far, there has been considerable interest.
An award will be made to artists whose work contains an original insight and conveys a challenging and imaginative message for change about asthma. The awards are being made in the memory of Polly Campbell who died suddenly of asthma in 2003, a few weeks short of her tenth birthday.
The distinguished panel of judges will include art critic for The Times, Rachel Campbell-Johnson; Richard Lee, Director of the Jerwood Space; Blackadder & QI producer John Lloyd and artist Gavin Turk.
Gavin Turk commented: ’I have agreed to support and endorse this event because I have had asthma since I was a kid and now my daughter suffers from it. The cures and remedies are still elusive to us. The motivation and subject matter behind this project could lead to an exciting array of artworks, and I am curious to see how it may develop.’
Yvonne Mulloy, Special Events Manager at Asthma UK added: ‘This is a unique opportunity to view how artists perceive asthma and how they translate this into their art. It is also an exciting opportunity for them to exhibit their work alongside pieces by eminent artists and Asthma UK is immensely grateful to them for kindly donating their work. The money raised through the auction will support further research to help understand more about the causes of asthma and to help free people with asthma from its effects.’
