Combined inhaler eases asthma management
13 September 2007
A new treatment approach with just one inhaler that acts as both a preventer and reliever could make asthma management easier for some adults with the condition. Studies have shown that people using Symbicort SMART – an additional way of taking the existing Symbicort inhaler - took no extra inhaled steroids and needed fewer oral steroids compared to traditional treatment methods. They also experienced fewer asthma attacks.
It is hoped that the new approach will simplify asthma management, whilst reducing steroid intake. Another potential benefit is a reduction in prescription charges – 43% of people with asthma who pay for their prescriptions find it difficult to afford them; those taking Symbicort SMART would only need to pay a single prescription charge.
Erica Evans, Asthma UK’s Asthma Care Development Manager said: ‘Asthma UK welcomes this new approach, which is available to people with asthma who are 18 and over. Whilst it may not suit everyone, Symbicort SMART allows good asthma control and provides a refreshingly simple management plan for people with asthma.
'People with asthma tell us that they welcome the SMART inhaler which can be used for regular morning and evening asthma therapy and also as a reliever when symptoms arise, so that they only need one inhaler. This means that they are able to treat both the symptoms and the underlying inflammation which is the cause, as soon as symptoms arise.
'The SMART approach gives people with asthma the chance to use more treatment when they feel unwell and cut back when they feel better, putting them in control of their asthma.
