Congratulations Team GB
22 August 2008

Elise Laverick won a bronze medal for Great Britain in the women's double scull at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Asthma UK would like to congratulate the British Olympic Team, which included a number of athletes with asthma, on their spectacular success in Beijing.

Team GB came in fourth on the medal table, just behind host country China, the US and Russia. They finished with a total of 47 medals – 19 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze.

Asthma UK ambassador Paula Radcliffe, despite suffering from an injury which resulted in limited training, finished the gruelling Women’s Marathon final in a time of two hours and 32.38 seconds.

Bradley Wiggins, who competed in the Track Cycling, won two Gold medals – one in the 4km Individual Pursuit and another in Team Pursuit, simultaneously helping break a world record in the heats with a time of 3:55:202.

Rower Elise Laverick, victim of a ‘hit-and-run’ accident in 2005, has come back in style this year– finishing third in the Women’s Double Sculls final and winning herself and the team a Bronze medal.

Other athletes with asthma who also have made the country proud include Marlon Devonish who just missed out on the Men’s 200m finals, Marathon runner Liz Yelling and 10,000m runner Jo Pavey.
