Swine flu advice for people with asthma
18 June 2009
The outbreak of swine flu has received a great deal of media coverage in recent weeks. As colds and viral infections are very common asthma triggers, people with asthma need to be especially vigilant and ensure they have an up to date Personal Asthma Action Plan.
Symptoms of swine flu in humans appear to be similar to those produced by standard, seasonal flu. These include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills and fatigue.
Most cases so far reported around the world appear to be mild.
Erica Evans, Clinical Lead at Asthma UK, offers the following advice on swine flu:'The most important advice for people with asthma is to adopt their usual infection control precautions at present but we will alert you to any new advice which becomes available.
'In the meantime Asthma UK offers the following advice:
- Flu is spread by droplets from talking, coughing or sneezing and contact with those droplets on surfaces, so ensure you cough or sneeze into a tissue which can then be disposed of safely.
- Wash your hands thoroughly. The process involves wetting the hands, using soap to develop a lather, rinsing thoroughly and then drying thoroughly.
- If you feel ill with flu, limit your exposure to the public including transport systems, medical practices and work in case of spreading it.'
Erica continues: 'If you you have flu, call your GP for advice. There are drugs that can work effectively if given soon enough after exposure (within the first 48 hours). They might also be used in individuals at risk. They are available on prescription only so your GP will advise.'
