Standards for Asthma Services for Children
Asthma UK Scotland was involved in developing the standards in conjunction with NHS Quality Improvement Scotland and other bodies. NHS Quality Improvement Scotland visited health boards in order to obtain information regarding asthma services for children and young people across primary and secondary care. These services were assessed against the seven standards for asthma services for children and young people:
- Organisation of asthma care
- Healthcare professional training and education
- Schools
- High risk asthma group
- Clinical review
- Emergency care
- Linking care
These standards have been developed to ensure that children and young people with asthma are involved in decisions about their treatment and that they receive a high level of care no matter where they live in Scotland. They encourage health boards to identify areas that require further service development.
The Standards have now been assessed across all health boards and findings from the peer review of the health boards reported at a conference organised by NHS QIS in November 2008 in Edinburgh.
