Funding research
Asthma UK funds a world-class programme of research across the UK.
To date, the charity has invested around £50 million in research to understand more about asthma and reduce the impact it has on people’s lives.
This includes funding two Asthma UK Professors, four Research Fellows and a wide variety of individual research projects around the UK.
In October 2008, researchers in Wales began an innovative research project to develop new treatments for asthma.
Professor Mark Baird at the University of Wales in Bangor is working with researchers in Belgium to create modified versions of natural tuberculosis bacteria molecules. Being infected with TB is linked to a reduced risk of developing asthma, and Professor Baird hopes to harness the beneficial properties of TB molecules to create new asthma treatments.
