Severe asthma e-campaign

We need your help to improve the lives of people with severe asthma.

There are a quarter of a million people in the UK who suffer with severe asthma. Many have difficulty breathing almost all of the time; suffer frequent, serious asthma attacks; have endless trips to hospital for emergency treatment and live with the constant fear that their asthma will one day kill them.

Big Ben.Asthma UK launched its 'Fighting for Breath' campaign in Parliament to improve the lives of people with severe asthma. These people battle against a lack of understanding from the education system, employers and healthcare professionals.

We spoke directly to people with severe asthma, by working with five groups of specialist healthcare professionals and researchers to set up discussions around the UK. The result of this research was our 'Fighting for breath' report.

Our campaign

Asthma UK is campaigning to improve support of people with severe asthma. We are calling on the Government to:

  • Ensure NHS organisations maintain investment in specialist nurses and specialist training
  • Ensure all agencies which assess entitlement to disability benefits take account of variable conditions like asthma
  • Ensure all public sector organisations promote equality for people with disabilities – which includes severe asthma
  • Ensure the National Strategy for COPD is published in England as soon as possible to ensure consistent standards of care for people with asthma
  • Ensure every school has a medical conditions policy, access to a school nurse and asthma awareness training for staff

You can help our campaign by taking part in our e-campaign.  

Click here to email your MP to ask them to support the 'Fighting for Breath' campaign by:

  • Adding their signature of support to EDM 505, calling on the Government to provide better services for people with severe asthma
  • Writing to their local Primary Care Trust or Health Board to ensure there are adequate respiratory specialist services in place in your area
