Fundraising at school

School classroomOn average, there are two children with asthma in every classroom in the UK. Asthma UK knows how worrying it can be for parents to make sure the school and the class know what to do if a child has an asthma attack and provides a range of information, support and training.

Organising a charity event or information day at your school is a great way to inspire students, teachers and parents to take asthma more seriously and help raise awareness.

Does your school have an asthma policy? Whether you’re a primary or secondary school teacher, parent or student, Asthma UK has all the information you will need to learn more about asthma in your school and classroom, giving a better understanding to everyone.

Whatever you decide to do, we are on-hand to offer any advice and help you need to help make your fundraising easy, enjoyable and successful.

Fundraising in Primary Schools

school boyHere are some ideas for ages 5-11 years:

  • How long can you stay quiet? Challenge the students to a sponsored silence.
  • Test knowledge with a spelling or times tables competition.
  • Bring in favourite board games for a fun and educational activity.
  • Dress in your own clothes or get dressed up for the day to raise money.
  • Challenge pupils to help their parents around the house, getting sponsored per chore.
  • Ask teachers and students to bring in their loose change and make a coin trail around your school. Then collect and donate the total amount to Asthma UK.

Kick Asthma Mini-Marathon

mini marathon kidsThe Kick Asthma mini-marathon encourages pupils to get fit and active while raising money to help prevent children from being hospitalised – one every 17 minutes – and missing out on school because of their asthma.

The idea of the mini marathon is for children to cover 26.2 miles by combining their efforts, each class or child doing a small section.

It’s the same distance as marathon champion Paula Radcliff runs.  Did you know that she has asthma as well?

Fundraising in Secondary Schools

A group of children who have been given the opportunity to play music to improve their breathing

Having an asthma awareness day in a secondary school is a good way to educate students about the dangers of an asthma attack, why taking an inhaler is so important and that if properly managed, young people with asthma can take part in school sports.

We have lots of literature and teaching materials available for students and teachers as well as specific school programmes designed to make your school environment more asthma friendly.

Some fundraising ideas for ages 11-16 years:

  • Arrange a bring and buy or table top sale.
  • Sponsored music, poetry, dance, swim, cycling competitions.
  • Ask your class to bring in baby photos and play ‘Who’s that baby?’
  • Have a ‘wear your own clothes’ day or themed day, for example green and purple (the Asthma UK colours)
  • The ‘smartie’ challenge – eat the chocolate and then fill the empty tube with 20p pieces collected from friends and family.
