Short spin on the bikes
After a good sleep, a strong Cuban coffee and a detailed briefing we set off to explore the beautiful historic city of Havana. In the afternoon we take the bikes for an exploratory spin around Havana soaking up the atmosphere of this vibrant capital.Day 3
Cycle 85km
We leave the bustling capital and head west along the coast for our first taste of the beautiful countryside. En route we pass through the small towns of Mariel and Quiebra Hacha before heading inland towards the Biosphere Reserve of Sierra del Rosario. Camp is at Los Nabos de San Juan, an oasis of natural pools within the reserve.Day 4
Cycle 90km
Leaving camp we retrace the first few kilometres to rejoin the main route out of the reserve towards Soroa. We have a steep climb and then it's downhill towards the natural waterfall in Soroa. Continuing through San Cristobal and Santa Cruz de los Pinos, we head towards San Diego de los Banos, a natural spa town.We camp in the ruined gardens of Hacienda Cortina, abandoned in the revolution, it makes a wonderful setting for the evening’s camp.
Day 5
Cycle 60km
A hearty breakfast stands us in good stead to face the early morning climb from camp through the jungle forest on a rough potholed road. We are rewarded by spectacular views of the renowned limestone crags, or mogotes, before a hurtling bumpy descent takes to us Che Guevara’s cave - a strategic hide- out and military headquarters during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. The afternoon takes us past the spectacular escarpment and onto Vinales, a haven of tranquility amongst the coffee plantations and paddy-fields. We camp on the outskirts of Vinales.Day 6
Cycle 66km
Heading south down the Valle de Vinales, we are once again surrounded by fabulous scenery as we cycle through the heart of the tobacco growing area. We have the opportunity to visit the Santo Thomas caves for a cool mid morning break before continuing onto the small village of Pons.Our evening’s camp is on the small island of Cayo Jutias connected to the mainland by a causeway. Our reward is 4km of unspoilt white sandy beaches and crystal clear seas. Beach volleyball is an option for anyone with any energy left!
Day 7
Cycle 90km
Today is our final day's ride to our island paradise. Returning to the mainland our route undulates through pine forests and banana and papaya plantations. We pass through the town of La Palma before arriving at our awaiting transport to Cayo Levisa and a night of celebration. A 25-minute boat ride delivers us to our island; our beach huts are separate from the hotel and face the crystal clear waters – a beautiful and fitting end to our cycle challenge.Day 8
A day at the beach
A day to relax, soak up beach life and celebrate our achievement. We spend the night in the hotel (lunch and dinner not included).Day 9
Free day in Havana
Return to Havana for some last minute shopping, sight seeing and an opportunity to soak up the capital's nightlife (lunch and dinner not included).Day 10
Leave Havana for London
A relaxed morning before we transfer to the airport in time to catch our international flight home (lunch not included).Day 11
