Help out at Asthma UK events

Volunteers are vital to help raise awareness of asthma and Asthma UK and we are looking for enthusiastic and committed people to join us as Event Support Volunteers.

We are looking for individuals to donate their time and skills to supporting our fundraising activities, with typical tasks ranging from staffing stands to promote the charity through to cheering on runners at one of our major events such as the London Marathon. By volunteering at activities like these you will make a valuable contribution towards the charity’s vital fundraising work.

As an Events Support Volunteer you will be invited to help support us in your local area in a variety of ways. The most important things our volunteers can offer us are commitment and enthusiasm, as we depend on this to help things run smoothly. At most events you will find a variety of jobs, which may/can include:

  • cheering participants on route at running events
  • helping to set up or take down a fundraising stand
  • helping with marshalling or signposting at an event
  • managing the refreshments for participants at the post-race reception
  • meeting and greeting participants
  • helping with the registration of participants at an event.

All Event Support Volunteers will receive an Asthma UK T-shirt and you will also receive any information and support needed before the event to make sure you feel prepared for your role and are able to enjoy it on the day.

How much involvement that you have in our events is entirely up to you. You can take part in as few or as many as you like, and you can attend for as many hours as you wish.

Coming up in 2011

  • Three Peaks Challenge ( 3-5 June 2011)
  • Great North Run (18 September 2011)
  • Royal Parks Half Marathon (9 October 2011)
  • London Bike Show ( January 2012)

Cheering

We're looking for people to cheer on out runners in the adidas women's 5K, Great North Run and Royal Parks Half Marathon.  Cheering parties are fantastic fun, highly rewarding and mean so much to our event participants:

'When things were starting to get tough, it was a great lift to hear the cheers and encouragement from our support teams, they were absolutely brilliant, the best charity support team out there on the course'.  David Beecroft, London Marathon runner

The only skills needed to be a cheerer are the abilities to make some noise and have some fun!

Helping at start briefings and post-race receptions

Welcoming people in and giving them a nice cup of tea and a sarnie after they have run several miles is really rewarding.  There's always a lot to do at our post-race receptions, setting up, breaking down, handing out drinks, taking photographs and chatting to participants.

Cycle Show

So that people know that they can support Asthma UK by taking part in an event, we need to get out there and promote our events.  The Cycle Show is a great opportunity to do this for our Beach to Beach Bike Ride.  If you are confident and outgoing, come and help us to chat to people at the show and encourage them to take part in the event.
