Raise awareness of asthma in your local community

Speak Up for Asthma volunteers act as representatives of Asthma UK raising awareness of asthma and the work of Asthma UK in their local communities.

‘For me it is a great opportunity to improve my public speaking skills, get more involved in the community and help to improve the lives of people with asthma.’

Could you support Asthma UK by becoming a volunteer speaker?

By volunteering for the Speak Up for Asthma team you will be given training and promotional materials to enable you to talk on behalf of Asthma UK.

Who will I be speaking to?

Groups of children, or adults, in your own area. These could be at schools, Guides or Scouts, community groups such as disability support organisations, council committees, Rotary clubs or the Women’s Institute. We may also ask you to talk to people attending events such as health awareness days and festivals.

When will presentations take place?

Talks mostly take place during the day but we sometimes get requests for evening presentations or need volunteers to staff stands at weekend events.

What training will I be given?

Daksha Kamdar, Speak Up For Asthma volunteer. We will invite you to a training day to learn about asthma and Asthma UK. We will train you in presentation skills and provide you with all the materials you need to give talks.  There is no medical training and you will not be qualified to give medical advice about asthma.

What will I get out of being a volunteer speaker?

You will be trained in public speaking and have the opportunity to practise this skill with a wide range of audiences. As a representative of Asthma UK you will attend a variety of social events and meet lots of new people. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing that you are raising awareness of asthma and raising vital funds for Asthma UK's work.

How will Asthma UK benefit?

Volunteer speakers help us to let more people know about asthma as a condition and the work of Asthma UK. This in turn helps us to gain further support for our work. The funds you raise through your presentations will help Asthma UK improve the lives of people with asthma.
