Responding to the publication of the UK Government’s Life Sciences Vision, Sarah Woolnough, Chief Executive of Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation, said:
"We are delighted to see the UK Government's newly published Life Sciences Vision which aims to tackle the major causes of the UK's most significant healthcare challenges and highlights the need for innovation in respiratory health. This is a landmark moment as respiratory has been called out as a key priority area, recognising the significant burden of ill health and mortality it causes and will be welcome news to the 1 in 5 people in the UK who are currently affected by respiratory disease.
"This vision presents a unique opportunity for the UK to cement its position as a global leader in respiratory science by radically improving the UK’s diagnostic capacity and technology to allow for earlier diagnosis and development of new treatments for a variety of lung diseases including asthma and COPD.
"As an organisation, we have been working tirelessly to ensure lung conditions are recognised as a top priority and funding for research is increased and we are really looking forward to seeing this vision being turned into action."
