People with asthma should not have to wait for their age group to get booster jab, charity urges

Responding to the announcement today [29/11/21] that the booster programme will be extended to all adults in order of descending age groups, Sarah Woolnough, Chief Executive of Asthma UK and the British Lung Foundation, said:

“While we welcome the news that all adults will be offered a COVID-19 booster vaccine, we remain concerned that many people with asthma may have to wait longer than they should to get their booster, if they have to wait for their age group to be called up. We have repeatedly explained to the government the problems with identifying people with asthma at risk of COVID-19 and how taking a precautionary approach by using the free flu jab list would have made things much easier and avoided confusion. We are calling for anyone with asthma on the free flu jab list to get a booster jab when they need it and not have to wait for their age group.

“Going forward, it is really important that the government uses the free flu jab list for any future booster vaccine programmes to ensure people with asthma at high risk from COVID-19 do not fall through the gaps.”
