Our work with government and politicians
All across the UK
Asthma UK is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of the 1 in 11 people with asthma in the UK.
By working closely with politicians and civil servants we work to ensure that people with asthma are heard and that Government policies support the improvement of asthma care and services.
Our work includes
- Campaigning for greater investment in asthma research and making the case for improvements in the quality of asthma care.
- Launching publications and events to inform politicians of the concerns and needs of people with asthma.
- Building a network of parliamentary champions to raise awareness of the seriousness of asthma in parliament.
- Influencing debates, responding to government consultations and supporting the work of cross party groups with an interest in asthma.
All Party Parliamentary Group on Respiratory Health
The purpose of the group is to increase awareness of respiratory issues in Parliament and ensure that government policies continue to improve care and services for people with respiratory disease
In 2014 Asthma UK worked the APPG to conduct a 12 month inquiry into respiratory deaths, focussing in particular on COPD and asthma. It looked at why so many people are still dying from respiratory disease, where the system is failing and what needs to change. Evidence was provided by healthcare professionals, academics, patients, NHS organisations and professional bodies.
The report shows that respiratory disease has been under-prioritised and neglected for many years, with a lack of leadership at both a national and local level. The UK has the worst death rate for respiratory disease amongst all the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations, and there are a number of factors contributing to this: a lack of awareness of respiratory disease, poor standards of care and under investment in infrastructure, data and medical research for respiratory disease.
