Key Application Information

Here is a brief overview of all the information you’ll be asked to provide when making an application.

1. Contact Details and CV

Your contact and basic details should be submitted along with a brief CV (2 sides of A4). Your CV should contain details of education, posts held and a list of recent and relevant publications.

2. Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Monitoring

We ask the principal applicant to provide confidential information regarding equality, diversity and inclusion to help us monitor the effectiveness of our advertising and recruitment of our grants and help us ensure equity. Co-applicants and other collaborators are not able to see the responses to these questions.

3. Suggested External Peer Reviews

Details of any potential reviews should be provided. These may or may not be used. Any conflicts of interest should be identified.

4. Research Proposal  

A detailed project proposal and scientific abstract as well as a proposed project timeframe should be submitted.

5. Patient/Public Involvement and Insight

Patient and public involvement in the development of your research proposal and details of how they will be involved in the study, if awarded, should be supplied.

6. Lay summary

These should be non-technical plain english writing which clearly explains the problem this research will address, the aims and expected impact for the project.

7. Finance requested

It’s important to provide accurate costings when applying for funding. No-cost / time-only extensions to awarded grants may be agreed in some circumstances (see Manage Your Grant), supplementary funding is not normally granted.

8. Grants held and grants applied for

Details of any grants you are currently holding or have applied for should be detailed including; reference number, title, sum, and end date.

9. Ethics  

Any research using animals, embryos (including hybrid embryos) or human participants must have written approval as granted by your organisation's ethical committee before the work commences. If you don’t have approval at the time of submitting your application, details of a planned approach to secure approval should be given.

10. Principal investigator and co-applicants

The salary of the principal investigator must be guaranteed during the term of the grant plus one year. The principal investigator must be employed at a UK based research organisation and will be responsible for the grant. Co-applicant roles should be clearly stated in the application.

11. Sign off from your organisation

Sign off from your organisation’s Head of Department and Secretary / Finance Office are required.
