Information for grantholders

This page covers all the information you should need as a research grantholder with Asthma UK.

If your application for funding is successful you will be sent an award letter and Terms and Conditions by Asthma UK's Research team. You will be expected to start work on your project within one year of receipt of these documents.

Budget claims

Claims for expenditure against your grant will be reimbursed on receipt of invoices submitted to the Research team quarterly in arrears, quoting your grant number.

Progress and outcome reporting

For all awards with duration longer than 12 months, Asthma UK requires an annual report, including but not limited to: an update of progress against the project's original objectives, details of any deviations and any issues faced. Information from this report will be used to update our supporters. For all awards, we require a Final Report on the outcome of your research project within one month of the end of the grant period. All reports are now administered through Asthma UK's online Research Management System, CC Grant Tracker.

Asthma UK also requires researchers to enter data on Researchfish, an online site that allows us to assess and communicate the impact of the research that we fund. Our Researchfish section below covers this in more detail.

Changes to your project

Any changes to your project need to be approved in writing by Asthma UK's Research team. This includes staff changes, amendments to protocol, virements of costs between budget codes and requests for no-cost extensions. Please contact research@asthma.org.uk with any questions.

Communicating about your research

It is essential for us to know about the progress you make in your research. All our research is funded through donations from generous members of the public, charitable trusts and corporate donors. We have an obligation to let them know exactly how their money is spent and what it achieves. We also want to promote research and communicate the benefits it can bring to people with asthma.

In particular, we'd love to hear about:

  • Papers you've submitted for publication that have arisen partly or wholly from an Asthma UK grant if you are submitting a paper for publication it is a requirement of your Asthma UK grant that you contact us and let us know as soon it is accepted for publication. We'll contact you if we want to publicise it in any way, and we never release any information without your say so.
  • If you'll be presenting your Asthma UK-funded work at any scientific conferences or other events.
  • If your Asthma UK grant leads to a change in policy or clinical practice.
  • Any awards or accolades you receive.

Intellectual property

Asthma UK encourages commercial exploitation of the results from our funded research. This is primarily to ensure that we enhance the likelihood that research findings are translated more swiftly into patient benefit, in line with our mission to stop asthma attacks and cure asthma. In addition, any potential to generate revenue from our funded research would allow us to fund further research in the future.

Grantholders should be aware of potential intellectual property (IP) that may result from their projects and should keep us informed from an early stage. The host institution should ensure that ownership of the IP arising from work funded in whole or in part by Asthma UK vests in the host institution (or its associated technology transfer company). All Asthma UK funded researchers, their host institutions and associated technology transfer companies should ensure the protection and exploitation of IP. In line with our standard terms and conditions for awards, you should approach Asthma UK for written consent before IP is exploited (such consent not to be unreasonably withheld).

Researchfish

It's crucial for us to capture the outcomes of the research we fund, not least to communicate the benefits of our research to our supporters. We know that reporting outcomes to a host of different funding agencies is burdensome, which is why Asthma UK has joined Researchfish, allowing our researchers to upload outcome data about their research to multiple funders easily and quickly.

Asthma UK has one submission period per year, during which we will ask our current and previous grantholders to submit their outcome data. Following this submission of data we will perform an annual analysis of the outputs to enable us tofeed back to our supporters and our Council of Trustees.

Submitting data is now a condition of the grant that comes under the heading 'Research monitoring' in our funding Terms and Conditions, along with submitting a final and in some cases, annual, narrative report through our online Research Management System, CC Grant Tracker.
